The Intercontinental Bar

This evening we are gong to a concert at the concert house in Vienna. Im really looking forward to it.   I like the concert house very much. Its accoustics are brilliant.  World class.  I am sure the concert is going to be brilliant. Sir Andras Schiff  is playing the piano. After the concert we are going for a drink.  We are going next door to the Intercontinental Hotel. The Intercontinental Hotel has one of the best bars in the world.  Its atmosphere is late night and fanstic. They even have a piano. Good music, good drinks, and a  very good atmosphere.  One can have a whale of a good time. But, the Intercontinental Hotel bar has another reason to be special. This bar is protected. A protected monument.  And, quite rightly so. It is a monument to the pleasures of life.  The Intercontinental bar in Vienna.

Heute Abend gehen wir zu einem Konzert im Konzerthaus in Wien. Ich freue mich schon sehr darauf.  Das Konzerthaus gefällt mir sehr gut. Die Akustik ist hervorragend.  Weltklasse.  Ich bin sicher, das Konzert wird großartig. Sir Andras Schiff spielt auf dem Klavier.  Nach dem Konzert gehen wir  auf einen Drink.  Wir gehen nebenan in das Hotel Intercontinental. Das Intercontinental Hotel hat eine der besten Bars der Welt.  Die Atmosphäre ist sehr nächtlich und fanstatisch. Sie haben sogar ein Klavier. Gute Musik, gute Drinks und eine sehr gute Atmosphäre.  Man kann sich dort prächtig amüsieren. Aber die Bar des Intercontinental Hotels hat noch einen anderen Grund, besonders zu sein. Diese Bar steht unter Denkmalschutz. Ein geschütztes Denkmal.  Und das völlig zu Recht. Sie ist ein Denkmal für die Genüsse des Lebens.  Die Bar des Intercontinental in Wien.

Oh nein, Gregor geht es nicht gut.  

Gregor hat sich erkältet.  

Ihm läuft die Nase. 

Gregor hat auch Halsschmerzen.  

Und von Gregors schlimmen Kopfschmerzen brauchen wir gar nicht erst zu reden.  

Der arme Gregor sollte ein paar Tage im Bett bleiben.  

Aber Gregor hat Glück.  

Er hat eine wunderbare Frau. 

Seine Frau kümmert sich um ihn. 

Letzte Nacht hat sie ihm ein sehr starkes Schlafmittel gegeben. 

Dann ist Gregors Frau mit ihren Freundinnen in eine Disco gegangen. 

Sie hatte eine schöne Zeit ohne Gregor.  

Heute Abend geht Gregors Frau wieder aus. 

Heute Morgen hat Gregors Frau ihrem Mann eine Tablette gegen seine Kopfschmerzen gegeben. 

Gregor wird es bald wieder besser gehen.

Oh no!  Gregor isn't well.  Gregor has caught a cold.  He has a runny nose. Gregor also has a sore throat.  And, we don't need to mention  Gregor's very bad headache.  Poor Gregor should stay in bed for a couple of days.  But, Gregor is lucky.  He has a wonderful wife. His wife is looking after him. Last night, she gave him a very strong sleeping pill. Then, Gregor's wife went out to a disco with her friends. She had a wonderful time without Gregor.  This evening, Gregor's wife  is going out again. This morning, Gregor's wife gave her husband a pill for his headache.  Gregor will soon be better again.

Short Story - Washing Day

Every Tuesday is washing day.  My wife gets up very early.  Usually at half past seven.  First a cup of tea, then work.  My wife gathers up the dirty washing to begin with. This is not so simple. My wife must not only look for dirty socks, shirts, and underwear, she must also strip all the beds. Fresh bed clothes every Tuesday. This is a must. Then, with her heavy sack of laundry, my wife goes down to the cellar.  Our laundry room is in the cellar.  We have a washing machine, a dryer, and a clothes line for hanging out washing.  Of course, we also have an ironing board and an iron.  Ironing clothes is not my wife's favourite job. But, someone must do it!  And, why not my wife?  At around lunch time, my wife comes up from the cellar. The hard work all done. Now everything's easy.  All my wife has to do is cook lunch and make the beds. Oh, how happy we are!

Kurzgeschichte - Waschtag

Jeden Dienstag ist Waschtag.  Meine Frau steht sehr früh auf.  Normalerweise um halb acht.  Erst eine Tasse Tee, dann die Arbeit.  Meine Frau sammelt erst einmal die schmutzige Wäsche ein. Das ist gar nicht so einfach. Meine Frau muss nicht nur nach schmutzigen Socken, Hemden und Unterwäsche suchen, sie muss auch alle Betten abziehen. Jeden Dienstag frische Bettwäsche. Das ist ein Muss. Dann geht meine Frau mit ihrem schweren Wäschesack in den Keller.  Unsere Waschküche ist im Keller.  Wir haben eine Waschmaschine, einen Trockner und eine Wäscheleine zum Aufhängen der Wäsche.  Natürlich haben wir auch ein Bügelbrett und ein Bügeleisen.  Wäsche bügeln ist nicht die Lieblingsbeschäftigung meiner Frau.   Aber jemand muss es tun!  Und warum nicht meine Frau?  Um die Mittagszeit kommt meine Frau aus dem Keller hoch. Die harte Arbeit ist getan. Jetzt ist alles ganz einfach.  Meine Frau muss nur noch das Mittagessen kochen und die Betten überziehen. Oh, wie glücklich wir sind!

I fancy plaice and chips for dinner this evening.  What a good idea.  I haven't had fish and chips for a very long time.  Where shall we meet?  Your place or mine?  Let's meet at the chipie. Then we can go to my place.  Shall I help lay the table?  The placemats are in the drawer.  Which is your place?  The one at the head of the table? And, the dog?  dogs have no place at the table.  I kicked your dog last night. That was bad.  It's not your place to teach my dog a lesson. And, it's not your job to  put me in my place.   Anyway, let's enjoy our plaice and chips. Can you pass the salt please? 

Short Story - My New Book

I went to the book shop last week. I went to buy a new book.  It worked.  I found a wonderful book. Papyrus by Irene Vallejo.  Papyrus tells the story of the written word from papyrus to books and much more as well.  A brilliant work in just 700 pages. I enjoyed this book very much.  It was easy to read and I couldn't put it down. You will enjoy it as well.

Letzte Woche war ich in einer Buchhandlung. Ich wollte ein neues Buch kaufen.  Es hat geklappt.  Ich habe ein wunderbares Buch gefunden. Papyrus von Irene Vallejo.  Papyrus erzählt die Geschichte des geschriebenen Wortes vom Papyrus bis zum Buch und noch viel mehr.  Ein brillantes Werk auf 700 Seiten. Ich habe dieses Buch sehr genossen.  Es war leicht zu lesen und ich konnte es nicht aus der Hand legen. Sie werden es auch genießen.

Wir wohnen in einem sehr schönen Haus.  

Unser Haus ist modern und neu. 

Wir haben nichts als das Beste.  

Im Obergeschoss befinden sich 4 sehr geräumige Schlafzimmer, 4 Toiletten und 3 Bäder.

Unten ist das Wohnzimmer, das Esszimmer und die Küche.  

Unsere Küche war sehr teuer.  

Mein guter Freund und Nachbar wohnt gleich die Straße hinauf.  

Er ist ein sehr armer Mann.  

Er ist mit Mary verheiratet.  

Sie haben drei sehr kleine Kinder.

Mein Freund und seine Familie leben in einem alten Holzhaus. 

Letzten Winter hat ein Sturm ihr Dach weggeweht.  

Mein Freund hat den Schaden selbst repariert.

Jetzt regnet es bei jedem Sturm in Strömen hinein. 

Die Frau meines Freundes, Mary, ist nicht sehr glücklich darüber.  

Aber mein guter Freund und Nachbar tut immer das Beste, was er tun kann. 

Dafür hat seine Frau Verständnis.

We live in a very nice house.  Our house is modern and new. We have nothing but the best.  Upstairs are 4 very spacious bedrooms, 4 lavatories, and 3 bathrooms. Downstairs is the lounge, dining room, and kitchen.  Our kitchen was very expensive.  My good friend and neighbour lives just up the road.  He is a very poor man.  He is married to Mary.  They have three very young children. My friend and his family live in an old wooden house.  Last winter, their roof blew off in a storm.  My friend repared the damage himself. Now, the rain pours in whenever it storms. My friend's  wife Mary is not very happy.  But, my good friend and neighbour always does the best he can do. This, his wife understands.   

A Present from Abroad

I went on a school trip when I was thirteen.  We went to Switzerland. To Interlarken.  We had a wonderful time. Discovering new things was always a fine thing to do.  We went hiking in the mountains, we did a lot of sightseeing,  and we even went to Bern for the day.  The day before we came home, we went shopping.  I bought my mother a present.  A music box that looked like a Swiss mountain chalet. When the roof was lifted, this miniature Swiss mountain chalet played a very nice tune.  Der fröhliche Wanderer.  I  was happy to give my mother this present.  But, my mother was not very happy.  She hated Der fröhliche Wanderer.  That was the first and last time I gave my mother a music box.

Als ich dreizehn Jahre alt war, habe ich eine Klassenfahrt gemacht.  Wir fuhren in die Schweiz. Nach Interlarken.  Wir hatten eine wunderbare Zeit. Neue Dinge zu entdecken war immer eine schöne Sache.  Wir sind in den Bergen gewandert, haben viele Sehenswürdigkeiten besichtigt und waren sogar einen Tag lang in Bern.  Am Tag bevor wir nach Hause kamen, gingen wir einkaufen.  Ich habe meiner Mutter ein Geschenk gekauft.  Eine Musikbox, die wie eine Schweizer Berghütte aussah. Wenn man das Dach anhob, spielte diese Miniatur-Schweizer Berghütte eine sehr schöne Melodie.  Der fröhliche Wanderer.  Ich war glücklich, meiner Mutter dieses Geschenk zu machen.  Aber meine Mutter war nicht sehr glücklich.  Sie hasste "Der fröhliche Wanderer".  Das war das erste und letzte Mal, dass ich meiner Mutter eine Musikbox schenkte.
