Schwimmen.
Ein gutes Mittagessen.
Und mein Lieblingseis.
It's a very hot day today. Far too hot. It's too hot to go outside. It's 30 degrees in the shade. It's too hot to do anything. I'm staying inside in the cool. It won't be so hot tomorrow. But, still hot enough. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Perfect weather for swimming. We're going round to my brother's. He's got a pool in his garden. I can't wait for tomorrow. Swimming. A good lunch. And, my favourite ice cream.

Where is Gregor's wife? She's up in the bedroom. What is she doing? She's packing the luggage. Gregor is going away. A buisness trip. Only two weeks. To the Bahamas. Poor Gregor. Two weeks all alone. How will he survive? He will phone home every evening. If he has time. Poor Gregor, all work and no play.

The Farm at Lane's End - The story of an English farming family, the Bartons. Farmer Ken, his wife Jean, and their son, Dave. In chapter 48, the Bartons are having breakfast together.
Vocabulary and phrases.
A change of scenery - Ein Tapetenwechsel
He's bound to help - Er wird bestimmt helfen.
Somewhere else - woanders
I'll get on to it straight away - Ich werde mich sofort darum kümmern.
While you're at it - wenn du gerade dabei bist

And, now to our story, The Farm at Lane's End - Chapter 48 - The last episode before the Bartons go on holiday. They will be back in September.
I say, Ken, you really look tired. Are you OK?
I'm fine thank Jean. But, I could really do with a holiday. What do you think?
Well, we haven't had a decent break for quite a long time, Ken. And, to be honest, I could do with a break, too. A change of scenery would be great. What do you think, Dave?
I couldn't think of anything better, mum and dad. But, the farm won't run on its own. Who could we ask to take over while we're gone?
That's easy, I'll ask my brother, Andy. He's bound to say yes, if I offer him enough money.
Well, if Andy agrees to help us, we could leave at the end of next week. Would you like to ask Claire if she'd like to come with us, Dave?
To be totally honest, mum and dad, I could do with a break from Claire, too. All she's interested in is art. Art, art, and nothing but art.
Shall we fly down to Greece, or, would you prefer somewhere else. What do you think, Jean?
I rather fancy the north of Scotland. We could drive there in a few hours., and there aren't many people there.
The north of Scotland is a great idea, Jean. Let's go online and look for somewhere nice to stay.
I'll do that, mum and dad. How much are we allowed to spend, dad?
The sky's the limit, Dave. Go for the best 5 star hotel you can find.
How long shall we go for, Ken?
I think we should aim to be back by the end of August. I need a very long break. And, I think it would do us all the world of good.
I'll get on to it straight away, mum and dad.
Would anyone like a fresh cup of tea?
Yes please, mum.
And, Jean, while you're at it, there's another thing you coud do, too. Could we have some more toast, please?
Of course, Ken. Your wish is my command.
Questions - Why does Ken need a holiday? Why is a change of scenery good? Why is the north of Scotland a good idea for Jean? Is Dave going to ask Claire if she'd like to come with them on holiday? Why doesn't Dave want to ask Claire? Does Ken want to stay in a cheap hotel? Please put "the sky's the limit" in a sentence. What has Dave offered to do? Why would you like to go to the north of Scotland? Where are you going on holiday this summer?
German Translation
Sag mal, Ken, du siehst wirklich müde aus. Ist alles in Ordnung?
Mir geht es gut, danke Jean. Aber ich könnte wirklich Urlaub gebrauchen. Was meinst du?
Was meinst du, Dave?
Was meinst du, Jean?

The Farm at lane's End - Chapter 47
The Farm at Lane's End. The story of English country life. The Bartons. Farmer Ken, his wife Jean, and their son Dave.
Vocabulary
To fix something is another way of saying to repair something.
If something is out of one's depth means it is too complicated or too difficulf for you to fix.
How time flies - Wie die Zeit vergeht.
If something has had its day means its end has come.

And, now to our story. The Farm at Lane's End, Chapter 47. Jean has had a laundry room shock!
The washing maschine is leaking, Ken!
This is terrible, Jean. How long has it been leaking, Jean?
I discovered it this morning when I went to put Dave's shirts in the machine. The laundry room floor was covered with water.
This sounds very serious, Jean. We must call a plumber, Jean. The machine must be fixed. And, as quickly as possible.
Maybe Dave could repair the machine, Ken? I'll ask him if he could have a look at it.
No way, Jean. Repairing a washing machine is way out of Dave's depth. Dave may be a wonderful artist, but he's certainly no plumber. Oh, and by the way, Jean. How old is the machine?
We bought it when Dave was a baby. That was more than 25 years ago.
That's unbeleivable, Jean. It seems like only yesterday that we bought it. How time flies. I think we should rather buy a new machine. Our old machine has surely had its day.
We'll go to Butler's after lunch, and, if we're lucky, he'll have a new washing machine in stock. Maybe, if we're lucky, they could deliver and install it this afternoon.
Oh, Ken, and while we're at it, we could kill 2 birds with one stone. I need a new toaster as well. Butler's sells very good toasters. That's where we bought the last one. Oh, and Ken, what shall I do if we have to wait one or two weeks for the new wahing machine?
No problem, Jean. You'll have to take the laindry to the river, just like the good old day. Now, be an angel and put on the kettle. Let's have a nice cup of tea.
Questions - Where did Ken and Jean buy their old machine? When did they buy their old machine? What's wrong with the machine? Why can't Dave repair the washing macine? Was Dave still a babyl when Ken and Jean bought the machine? How will Jean do the laundry if she has to wait for a new machine? How long does a washing machine normally last? What else does Jean need from Butler's? Please put "kill 2 birds with one stone" in a sentence. Can you do 2 things at the same time?
German Translation
Die Farm at Lane's End.
How time flies – Wie die Zeit vergeht.

Meine Frau findet immer, was sie sucht.
Frisches Obst und Gemüse.
Ausgezeichnetes Fleisch.
Sehr guter Fisch.
Heute gibt es Kabeljau zum Mittagessen.
Fisch mit Kartoffelsalat.
Und Zitronenkuchen zum Nachtisch.

Most of the stallholders are very honest people. But, not all. Sometimes, even my wife gets ripped off. This doesn't happen very often. My wife always finds what she wants. Fresh fruit and vegetables. Excellent meat. Very good fish. We're having cod for lunch today. Fish with potatoe salad. And, lemon cake for sweet. All from the market.

And, now to our story. The Farm at Lane's End. Chapter 46.
The Bartons are having breakfast.
Guess what, Dave and Ken. My sister Sally phoned last night. Jane's got a new job!
Cousin Jane's got a new job, mum. What kind of job?
A very good job, Dave. Jane's got a new job as a receptionist at Fulmer's, the pharmaceutical company. You know, the company that makes vaccinations.
That's very good news, Jean. Being a receptionist is something, I'm sure, Jane will be very good at. Being a receptionist is a job that's just up Jane's street. I'm sure, Jane's very happy.
You're right, dad. Jane might not be the sharpest tool in the box, but, she has other very good qualities that every good receptionist should have.
You're right, Dave. Jane is very friendly and has a warm and welcoming personality, too.
And, not only that, Jean. Jane is a very well organised and efficient girl. Just right for the things a receptionist has to do. Booking hotel rooms, organizing meetings, making travel arrangements, and many other things, too.
And, don't forget, mum and dad, Jane has a very good telephone manner. She has a wonderful positive voice. A voice that makes people feel welcome.
And, most importantly, Jane always smiles. She's a very happy and positive person.
And, when's Jane starting at Fulmer's?
She's starting next Monday. She's really looking forward to it. A new begining.
That's right. Much better that washing up in an Indian restaurant. I'm sure, Jane's going to be very succesful.
Would anyone like another cup of tea?
Yes please, mum. And could I have some more toast, please. I'm very hungry this morning. I could eat a horse!
Questions - Why is being a receptionist just up Jane's street? Is Jane a very clever girl? Has Jane a warm and friendly personality? What was Jane's previous job? What are some of the things a receptioist must do? Why must receptionists be organised? When is Jane starting at Fulmer's? Why could Dave eat a horse? What does Fulmer's manufacture? What kind of voice has Jane? Why is a good telephone manner important? Why does a happy voice sound better on the phone?

(I could eat a horse)

Dave has decided to take up painting. He fancies himself as an artist. Claire is helping Dave.
I say, Claire, can you give me a hand, please? I can't get the hang of this picture I'm trying to paint.
What are you trying to paint, Dave?
I'm trying to paint a still life. A bunch of flowers. I always imagined still lifes to be easy. But, bunches of flowers are not so easy to paint after all.
Let me see what you're doing, Dave. OK, now I understand. This picture isn't so difficult to paint. In the spaces where there is a number 4 you must paint red, in the spaces with a number 2 you must use blue, and so on and so on. Just keep on trying, Dave. You'll soon get the hang of it.
Oh, this is easy Claire. Now I know why you became an artist. Painting great pictures is very, very easy. Did you learn to paint by numbers at art school?
No, Dave. I started painting by numbers when I was 5.
And, you've been painting by numbers ever since?
No, Dave. I stopped painting by numbers when I was 6.
So, it didn't take you long to get the hang of painting great pictures. You must feel like Picasso. I wonder if Picasso started his career by painting with numbers as well.
Everything's possible, Dave.
In any case, Claire, now I really understand why you decided to take up art. You're an artistic genius.
And, you're a genius with cows and pigs, Dave.
I say, Claire, can you put the kettle on, please? I'm dying for a cup of tea.
Of course, Dave. But, I'm sorry. I haven't any cherry cake.
No problem. I'll get mum to give you the recipe. The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.
Can I offer you a slice of ginger cake?
I'm not sure I'd like it, Claire. Mum's never made a ginger cake.
I'm not your mother, Dave!
Questions - What is Dave trying to paint? Why can't Dave get the hang of painting a bunch of bananas? Do you think Dave will make a good artist? How old was Claire when she started painting by numbers? How old was Claire when she stopped painting by numbers? Why does Dave think that Claire is a genius? Please put "give someone a hand" in a sentence. Why is Claire beginning to lose her patience with Dave? Is Dave on the same intellectual level as Claire?

Sehr viel Arbeit.

And, now to our story, The Farm at Lane's End - Chapter 44
Ken and Dave are having an afternoon break. A nice cup of tea and a slice of cherry cake. They're in the midle of a very hard job. They're repairing the tractor. Dave is not very happy.
How much longer do you think this job is going to take us, dad?
It's hard to say, Dave. But, by my estimation, I'd say at least another one or two hours. If we're lucky, we'll be finished by tea time. If not, well, it's going to be a very long night.
That's bad, dad. I promised to pick Claire up at seven. We're going to the cinema.
Well, Dave, you might have to postpone the cinema until another time.
Couldn't we call it a day and carry on tomorrow, dad?
That's out of the question, Dave. We must have this tractor working again. We need it first thing in the morning. We've an important job to get done. So, come on Dave, in for a penny, in for a pound. Let's get going again.
You're right, dad. In for a penny, in for a pound. And, I'm sure Claire won't mind not going to the flicks this evening. As you said, dad, one can always postpone the pictures.
That's my boy! So we might as well get going. And, who knows, Dave. We might be finished qicker than expected.
That would be great dad. And, maybe, I won't have to cancel the pictures, after all!
Questions -
What are Ken and Dave repairing? Is this a very easy job? Why did Dave suggest they call it a day? How long did Ken think the job was going to take them? What time had Dave promised to pick claire up? Please put "in for a penny, in for a pound" in a sentence. Will Claire be angry if Dave postpones their night out to the cinema? Please put "I might as well" in a sentence. When was the last time you went to the flicks?

Und nun zu unserer Geschichte, The Farm at Lane's End - Kapitel 44
Also, komm schon, Dave, wer wagt, gewinnt. Lasst uns wieder loslegen.
Du hast Recht, Dad. Mitgefangen, mitgehagen.

And, now to our story, The Farm at Lane's End - Chapter 43
The Bartons are having afternoon tea. Ken has something to say.
You'll never guess who I bumped into in the village this afternoon.
Who did you bump into, dad?
I bumped into my brother Andy. He had just come out of the florist's. He'd bought a bunch of flowers for Sarah.
It's not Sarah's birthday until September. I'm sure he's done something stupid again. He probably has a bad conscious about something or other.
Or, maybe he was just being nice?
I don't think so, Dave. Your uncle never buys flowers for Sarah. But, you never know, maybe he's improved his ways. We'll probably find out tomorrow. He's bringing Sarah over for elevenses in the morning. Maybe, they have some interesting news.
I'm curious, Ken.
Oh, and there's one thing more, Jean. Andy hinted something about staying for lunch.
Well, if they're staying for lunch, they'll have to take pot luck. I haven't even been shopping this week, and, I don't even know what I have. I must look in the 'freezer. Maybe, I'll find something good. But, I hope they're not expecting anything too exciting. I've better things to do than cook for your brother and his wife.
Well, let's wait and see, Jean. If the worst comes to the worst, we can always offer them fish-fingers.
That's a good idea, dad. Fish fingers and chips is one of my favourite meals!
Would anyone like another slice of cherry cake?
Yes, please mum. And, another cup of tea, please.
And, the same for me, too, please.

What did Ken suggest they serve for lunch?

Und nun zu unserer Geschichte, The Farm at Lane's End - Kapitel 43

Maitag.
Viele Feiertage.
Sehr gutes Essen.
Und, sehr guter Wein.
Prost!
It's the first of May today. Mayday. Everyone's thinking of work. Today is a holiday. Why is everyone thinking of work? I don't understand. I enjoy taking it easy on Mayday. I never think of work. Many people go to the Ringstrasse in Vienna. Marching and listening to speeches is an old Mayday tradition. I prefer another Mayday tradition. Fried chicken and beer. Much more fun than listening to speeches. In Austria people know how to live. Many public holidays. Very good food. And, very good wine. Cheers!

And now to our story - The Farm at Lane's End - Chapter 42
Jean has heard an interesting programme on the radio. Now, the Bartons are discussing it over breakfast.
I say Dave and Ken, I heard an interesting programme on the radio last night. It was all about hobbies. Apparently, interesting people have interesting hobbies, and boring people have boring hobbies.
What is an interesting hobby, Jean?
What do you think, Dave?
A good hobby is having an interest in something that interests you. Like stamp collecting or horse riding.
You're right, Dave. But, sometimes, interesting hobbies can be a disaster. One day, Uncle Andy decided to take up motor racing as a new hobby. He bought himself a very fast car which cost him a pretty penny, then, the rest, he believed, would be easy. He entered one or two races He believed he'd soon be very rich with all the money he was going to win. But, then the penny dropped. Andy hadn`t even thought about the extra costs involved in his new hobby. He had bitten off more than he could chew. And, to cut a long story short, Andy sold his car and took up stamp collecting instead.
That reminds me of my sister Jane. She decided to take up flower arranging. She thought she was going to win all the flower arranging prizes in England. But, she had no idea of what she was doing. And, she soon gave up flower arranging.
Has Claire got a hobby, Dave?
Claire's hobby is art photography. She even won a prize in an an art photography competition. She entered a photo of a black square on a black background. It was the most amazing picture I've ever seen. Of course, most normal people don't understand high art. Claire's sister said that claire had a lose screw. But, Claire's sister hadn't the faintest idea of what she was ralking about.Claire's sister beleives that good art is a still life showing a bunch of bananas.
Guess what's for afternoon tea.
Cherry cake.
No, this afternoon, we're having scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. But, don't worry, I'm making a cherry cake tomorrow.
Mum, you're the best mum in the world.

Was denkst du, Dave?
Kirschkuchen.

ANd, now to our story -
It's 7 o'clock in the morning. Outside it is still very cold. A typical late April morning. Farmer Ken and Dave have just come in from milking the cows. Their is a delicious smell of sizzling bacon and eggs. Jean, too, has been busy. The Bartons are enjoying their breakfast.
I say, Dave and Ken, you'll never guess who I bumped into in the village yesterday.
Who did you bump into mum?
Well, I had just come out of the post office. and there she was. Anne Cooper.
Who's Anne Cooper, mum?
She was one of my best friends at school. We really got on well together. I think I was her only friend in those days.
Why was that, mum?
Anne was not very popular. She was always a bit of a plain jain. She never spoke much, and she never showed any interest in what was going on.
Then, why were you such good friends, mum?
Well, I knew Anne better than most people did. My mum and Anne's mum were best friends. And, Anne often came to play after school. In fact, Anne and I had a lot of great fun together. At school, Anne was plain and boring. After school she was a completely different girl.
What was she like, Jean?
Anne was mainly interested in reading. We often used to talk about the books we had read. Of course, Anne read far more than I did. And, in some ways, I think that's why she was such a boring girl. Her world was her books.
And, what happened to Jane?
After leaving school, she went up to Oxford to read classics. And, I'm sure she did well.
And, when was the last time you saw her, mum?
For the life of me, Dave, I can't remember. It must be at least 20 years.
And, when are you seeing her again, mum? In another 20 years?
Persih the thought! That's a terrible idea. I don't want to wait that long. In fact,Anne and her husband are coming for dinner next Saturday.
That's great, Jean. Anne actually sounds like a very intersting person. I can't wait to meet her.
And, can I invite Clair, mum?
Of course, Dave. I'm sure Clair and Anne will hit it off very well. Would anyone like another cup of tea?
Yes please, mum. And another round of toast and marmalade, please.
And, the same for me, too, please.
You two can never stop eating. And, guess what I'm baking this afternoon.
A chocolate cake, mum.
No, don't be silly, It's not your birthday, Dave. I'm baking a cherry cake.
What a surprise.

German Translation
In weiteren 20 Jahren?
