Good Luck!

It's a wonderful morning in London.  I have just finished breakfast.  I only had time for a very fast breakfast. Tomorrow, we are leaving for the south. We are going to the Antarctic. To see the penguins.  It is very cold in the south.  The fast-ice really brings down the temperature.  We are going on a luxury cruiser.  Too much food, I'm sure.  We will have to fast when we get back. Now, I must make a quick phone call.  I need a taxi.  We must go to the port.  There, the ship is held fast by very strong ropes.  We can't wait for tomorrow.  Our ship sails at 10 in the morning.

 A Lazy Toorington Weekend!

This weekend was a very slow weekend.  We had a lazy time.  We spent most of our time in the garden.  A little bit here and a little bit there.  Nothing special.

But, the grill  on Saturday evening was great. Two beautiful steaks. We bought them at the butchers on Saturday morning. And, the wine  came from The Toorington Wine Bar. Very good and a very good price. Only 10 pounds a bottle.

After dinner we watched Grafenegg on TV.  Live from Austria.  Buchbinder was playing.  A sensational concert.  Brilliant as usual.   One day, we are definitely going to Grafenegg.  I love the atmosphere.  Classic and fine.

And, what's planned for next week?   We are meeting Mick of the Toorington theatre club.  See you next week.

Short true story - Morag's Horse

Our good friends the McGregors live in the highlands of Scotland.  Their daughter Morag has a horse.  Its name is Sandy.  Morag's horse is very unusual.  Sandy is a 4 legged horse. Most horses in the highlands of Scotland have only 2 legs. Going up and down Scottish mountains is easier for 2 legged horses. That's why 4 legged horses are not very common in Scotland. And, by the way, 2 legged horses are cheaper to keep than 4 legged horses.  2 legged horses only need 2 shoes.  Morag's horse Sandy.  The pride of the highlands.

Kurze wahre Geschichte - Morag's Horse

Morags Pferd Sandy.  Der Stolz der Highlands.

The Intercontinental Bar

This evening we are gong to a concert at the concert house in Vienna. Im really looking forward to it.   I like the concert house very much. Its accoustics are brilliant.  World class.  I am sure the concert is going to be brilliant. Sir Andras Schiff  is playing the piano. After the concert we are going for a drink.  We are going next door to the Intercontinental Hotel. The Intercontinental Hotel has one of the best bars in the world.  Its atmosphere is late night and fanstic. They even have a piano. Good music, good drinks, and a  very good atmosphere.  One can have a whale of a good time. But, the Intercontinental Hotel bar has another reason to be special. This bar is protected.

Short Story - Washing Day

Every Tuesday is washing day.  My wife gets up very early.  Usually at half past seven.  First a cup of tea, then work.  My wife gathers up the dirty washing to begin with. This is not so simple. My wife must not only look for dirty socks, shirts, and underwear, she must also strip all the beds. Fresh bed clothes every Tuesday. This is a must. Then, with her heavy sack of laundry, my wife goes down to the cellar.  Our laundry room is in the cellar.  We have a washing machine, a dryer, and a clothes line for hanging out washing.  Of course, we also have an ironing board and an iron.  Ironing clothes is not my wife's favourite job. But, someone must do it!  And, why not my wife?  At around lunch time, my wife comes up from the cellar. The hard work all done. Now everything's easy.  All my wife has to do is cook lunch and make the beds. Oh, how happy we are!

Kurzgeschichte - Waschtag

I fancy plaice and chips for dinner this evening.  What a good idea.  I haven't had fish and chips for a very long time.  Where shall we meet?  Your place or mine?  Let's meet at the chipie. Then we can go to my place.  Shall I help lay the table?  The placemats are in the drawer.  Which is your place?  The one at the head of the table? And, the dog?  dogs have no place at the table.  I kicked your dog last night. That was bad.  It's not your place to teach my dog a lesson. And, it's not your job to  put me in my place.   Anyway, let's enjoy our plaice and chips. Can you pass the salt please?

A Present from Abroad

I went on a school trip when I was thirteen.  We went to Switzerland. To Interlarken.  We had a wonderful time. Discovering new things was always a fine thing to do.  We went hiking in the mountains, we did a lot of sightseeing,  and we even went to Bern for the day.  The day before we came home, we went shopping.  I bought my mother a present.  A music box that looked like a Swiss mountain chalet. When the roof was lifted, this miniature Swiss mountain chalet played a very nice tune.  Der fröhliche Wanderer.  I  was happy to give my mother this present.  But, my mother was not very happy.  She hated Der fröhliche Wanderer.  That was the first and last time I gave my mother a music box.

Suggested Solutions

I really love flying.  The thrill of boarding.  The smell of kerosine.  First class luxury.  The magic of take-off. The feeling of speed.  The drinks.  The meals.  The brilliant service.  The excitement of landing.  I also like going by ship.  The relaxing speed.  Time for long drawn out meals.  Watching the sea go by.  The feeling of power. Our Old Kitchen Table

Suggested Solutions

There are many good plays on in Vienna.  Vienna has many good theatres.  I often used to go to the theatre. Now, I haven't so much time.  Theatres are magical places.  Waiting for the curtain to rise.  The suspence.  The lights.  The costumes.  The  applause.  Theatre is better than cinema.  Each play is different. In the audience, you are part of the play.  A good audience is very important.

My First Car

My very first car was an Austin 7.  A brilliant car.  I bought it second.hand. And, in my old Austin 7, we drove all over Britain.  Scotland, England, and Wales.  From north to south, from east to West. We had fabulous fun.  Driving in those days was easy.  Not so much traffic.  But, in those days,  everyone took very big risks.  No seat belts and no airbags. Nobody gave danger a thought. The fun of the road was much more important.

Mein erstes Auto

His marks are always positive.  But, John doesn't like religion.  He finds it boring.  But, all the same, John still has to pass the exams.  Maybe, we should start praying for John.

Our Greenhouse

My wife has very green fingers, and her favorurite place in the garden is her greenhouse.  Greenhouses are perfect for growing salad crops and vegetables. Always fresh when you want them.  And, rabbits and slugs are no problem.  These little creatures have no access to my wife's greenhouse.  Normally, slugs and rabbits are very big problems for gardeners. So, if you have room in your garden, a greenhouse could be perfect for you. Enjoy your greens!

Suggested Solutions

I used to go dancing many years ago.  When I was young.  I went dancing every Friday night.  I used to meet my friends at the market cross.  We then went to the village hall.  The dance always started at 8. We always danced to the latest hits.  We had a very good disco.  I used to be a very good dancer.  The girls enjoyed dancing with me. Sadly, the dance always finished at midnight.  Then, time to go home. But, one thing was sure.  Next Friday was dance night again.

My Bucket and Spade

We used to go the seaside ever year for our summer holidays.  I was still very young.  And, I used to have a bucket and spade. And,  I used to dig very deep holes in the sand and build beautiful sand castles.  But, my spade was a dangerous spade. My spade was made of metal. There were no plastic spades then.  I often cut my toes.  This hurt very much.  I remember my childhood holidays well. Cut and injured toes mixed with salty sea water and sand. A very painful mixture.

We're jumping from party to party.  Last week we celebrated Christmas.  This week we're dressing up for new year. We're going to a party.  Many people will be there.  Everyone likes a good party.  Everone's optimistic.  Things will be  definately better. Dreams will surely come true.  A great party is the best way to start a new year.  Good singing and dancing.  Sekt and Champagne, and very good food.  A great party mood.  Everyone's welcome. Then comes January the first. The New Year's Concert.  I love it.  Vienna at its best.

My Grandfather's Desk

I still use my Grandfather's desk.  A beautiful and powerful piece of furniture. Now, my grandfather's desk is my desk.  I am a lawyer. My office is in the middle of Vienna. And, my grandfather used to be a lawyer as well.  In fact, I inherited his office.  My grandfather used to be a very hard worker, and I, too, am a very hard worker. But, a very good desk is important. And, my grandfat's desk is the best desk of all.

Niemand weiß, was er kaufen soll.

Christmas is here again.  A time of great joy.  Many people like Christmas.  Christmas shopping is very good fun. The crowds and the waiting.  Buying presents will never be easy.  Nobody knows what to buy. What can buy for someone who has all that they need?  A tie, a scarf, a pair of socks, a shirt, or a pullover!  Do you remember what you got for Christmas last year?  Do you remember what you gave last year?  Giving is better than receiving.  But, if everyone gives, everyone's receiving as well.  Christmas is fun.  Good cheer, good fun, and good food.

Our Couch

Our couch is a part of our family.  It has been with us for very many years.  My grandfather bought it in a second hand shop in London. It  was a very cheap couch.  Our couch is very comfortable. It is just right for afternoon naps.  Our couch has been recovered 6 or 7 times.  Now it is red. It used to be yellow and blue.  But, our couch has a secret as well. It is home to a family of mice.

Unsere Couch

Gregor mag Weihnachten sehr gerne.

Gregor geht jedes Jahr zur Mitternachtsmesse.

Gregor liebt die Musik.

Gregors Lieblingsweihnachtslied ist Stille Nacht.

Gregor liebt es, mitzusingen.

Stille Nacht erinnert Gregor an seine Kindheit.

Gregor glaubt immer noch an das Christkind.

Das Christkind bringt Gregor jedes Jahr zu Weihnachten eine Kiste Wein.

Der Wein ist immer von schlechter Qualität.

Der Wein verdunstet immer.

Macht nichts, Gregor.

Suggested Solutions

Gregor likes Christmas very much,  Gregor goes to midnight mass every Christmas.  Gregor loves the music.  Gregor's favourite Christmas hymn is Stille Nacht.  Gregor enjoys joining in with the singing.  Stille Nacht reminds Gregor of his childhood.  Gregor still believes in the Christkind.  The Christkind brings Gregor a crate of wine every Christmas.  Bad quality wine. The wine always evaporates. Never mind, Gregor.

Our Little Balcony

We have a very small balcony.  But, small, too, can be big.  Our balcony is full of wonderful plants. Different colours and different smells.  Our balcony is a small corner of paradise.  We really enjoy relaxing on our balcony at the end of each day.  And, the birds, too, enjoy our balcony.  They come and they come.  Many different kinds of birds.  Big ones and small ones.  And, the birds are always hungry and thirsty. This is never a problem.  There is always enough for the birds to eat and drink.  Our balcony is a corner of paradise.

This week's short story

Our Cupboard under the Stairs

Our cupboard under the stairs is very, very useful.  A very practical space.  We use it for storing things we don't need at the moment.  Winter shoes in the summer and summer shoes in the winter.  Summer coats and winter coats.  We also keep old pots and pans.  Things that might come in useful one day. In other words junk, Things, in reality,  we will never use again.  But, we don't only have junk.  We also have a family of mice.  They come out every night and run to the kitchen.  There, they eat all our cheese.

The people are very friendly.  Especially at the markets.  Markets are wonderful places.  The goods are fantastic. Ingrid has seen all the important sights.  Ingrid loves the Bosporus. The great divide.  Europe and Asia.  Ingrid has bought a souvenir to bring home.  A Turkish carpet.  Ingrid wants to remeber her trip to Istanbul.

This week's short story

Our Chandalier

Our chandalier is far too big for our livingroom.  In fact, it looks very much out of place.  We have to walk round it to turn on the TV.

Originally, our chandalier used to hang in my great uncle's castle.  That was many years ago.  Uncle Horice lost his castle many years ago.  Uncle Horace was beheaded.  Curtains for old Horace.  But, not the end of the chandalier.

The chandalier has been hanging in our livingroom ever since.  Not very convenient.  We are now looking for a new castle to buy.  Our old chandalier is in need of a home where it can hang and be happy.

Unser Chandalier

Listen and Read - Listen to this short sketch about Jan de Cock.  His life behind bars. In and out of prisons.  All over the world.  Friends he has made.  The good he has done, and the time he was arrested in China, beaten up, and thrown into prison. This is an interesting listen and read.
